Today, we attended the Danish Refugee Council’s Global Displacement Forecast 2026 launch event, which brought together senior humanitarian professionals, policymakers, and civil society voices to examine the shifting landscape of global forced displacement.
The session opened with remarks from DRC Secretary General Charlotte Slente, followed by a detailed presentation of key findings by Senior Analyst Alexander Kjærum. What struck me most was the analysis of the 2025 decline in displacement figures not as genuine progress, but as a product of forced returns, violence-driven movement, displacement saturation in places like DR Congo and Sudan, and critically, a collapse in monitoring coverage from 57 to just 36 assessments between 2024 and 2025.
The data gap alone should give any practitioner pause. The presentation also laid bare the contraction in the broader response architecture: humanitarian funding down by $9 billion in 2025, ODA to fragile and conflict-affected states down by $4 billion, and peacebuilding funding reduced by a further $2 billion.
All at a moment when anticipatory action should be scaling up, not retreating
